Communication is at the heart of door-to-door fundraising. Being able to convey ideas, engage someone, and make them feel what you want them to feel about an organisation or campaign are all vital to whether or not you’re able to successfully create relationships. Key to this is the fundraiser themselves and how they approach emotions and emotional balance.
Why is Communication so Important in Door-to-Door Fundraising?
There are many reasons why humans communicate – it’s something that we do constantly, whether it’s for the purposes of persuading or attracting someone, exchanging information, or expressing emotions. In the door-to-door fundraising world, it’s fundamental to whether there is a successful outcome. Poor communication means someone walks away from a conversation with no idea why they should have taken the action they were being asked to take – and with no emotional connection to a cause. Great communication establishes relationships and interests on both sides.
How does Emotional Balance Help?
Emotional balance is being able to approach a situation like a fundraising conversation without projecting any of your own stuff onto it. That means that a fundraiser is navigating the challenges of door-to-door fundraising conversations in a calm and effective way. So, what does that look like in practice?
- Not taking things personally. A ‘no’ or rejection are all part of the process of door-to-door fundraising but can feel even harder to take because that is being delivered face to face. This is where emotional balance is vital because it allows someone to hear an objection and not react with their own negative emotion. Instead, the process is to get curious about what has created the ‘no’ – and also what might deliver a ‘yes’ further down the line.
- Being likable. When it comes down to it, likeability is the number one reason why people will commit to something like charity donations (or buying anything). And likeability means establishing trust, allowing someone to get to know you, and also making a great first impression. Emotional balance has a big role to play in all of this, from being able to present information in a calm and engaging way to controlling the reactions you have if things don’t go your way.
- Being able to see what the other person needs. Intuition and empathy are also vital for door-to-door fundraising and tend to be the result of emotional balance. It’s intuition and empathy that help to build connections with potential donors which also means fundraisers can see the signs in terms of how to deliver their message. That might be noticing if too much information is being offered and someone is getting overwhelmed, knowing what to share, being able to ask open-ended questions, and avoiding having a negative reaction if someone doesn’t respond in the right way.
Emotional balance brings a whole new level of effectiveness to door-to-door fundraising. It’s what allows connections to be established and relationships built.
