My name is Will Greaves and I started at Wesser as a fundraiser in autumn of 2018. After spending many enjoyable months recruiting donors for great causes, I left the following September to go to university. Obviously I couldn’t carry on as a fundraiser but I didn’t want to stop working for Wesser so becoming a student ambassador was the perfect solution.
In a nutshell, being a student ambassador means representing Wesser at the university you go to, helping the recruitment team with interviewing potential fundraisers, and attending things like job fairs. You also get full training in how to interview people as well as the option of attending national events where ambassadors from all over the country meet
up. The experience in recruitment is pretty unique among university students, and I feel that it gives you a whole load of new skills that you might not have practised before since it’s so different to other jobs I’ve done (including fundraising). When it comes to making a CV the experience is a great addition.
As a medical student, my timetable is very busy and often unpredictable. For me personally, the student ambassador role is great for this reason since you only have to commit a minimum of 3.5 hours a week (part of a morning or an afternoon) and can change the day or time you work between weeks to fit it round your timetable. It’s all done over zoom calls now as well, so the flexibility really is a massive benefit.
If you’re anything like me, between takeaways and road trips, university is also a massive drain on my finances. As well as being flexible, the student ambassador role pays well and gives you guaranteed work which helps support me while at university. Plus there’s the option of extra hours as well as jobs fairs and similar events to help earn more!
Overall the job has been great while I’ve been at university, allowing me to stay involved in Wesser in a flexible capacity and supporting me while at med school.
